Best Tour Day So Far!

*Let me start this post by saying that I was in no way paid or otherwise compensated by ANY of the person’s or providers mentioned in this post.  These people have NO IDEA that I’m writing about how awesome they are and I paid for all of our tours.

Our very first evening I sat down and did a bit of research on tours to take.  I hate your typical “bus tour” and “mega tour” in which you are herded around a city with 25-45 people you’ve never met, on a bus.  So I finally found (on Trip Advisor) a private tour company named Private Tours of Washington.  Y’all, these guys are AWESOME!!!!  I called to try and book a tour for early in the week and ended up going out on a night tour of DC that very evening.  It was great!  A private driver picked us up in a Town Car and we then met our tour guide Gil.  He and our driver Monty took us all around DC making several stops to get out and see the sights.  His knowledge of this city (he’s an 8th generation DC guy) and its history was amazing!  We had such a great time.

We enjoyed it so much that we booked another tour with them.  This time our guide was Bill Thomas (he owns the company) and Monty drove us again.  We saw Ford’s Theater and got loads of great information on the Lincoln assassination and the conspiracy involved (there is even a Key West connection).  It turns out Bill had recently written about this subject (click here for the link to the article) and his knowledge was astounding.  It was so nice to have “insider” information on the subject.  I love stuff like that!

Next we headed out to Mount Vernon. What a beautiful plantation!  Again, Bill’s knowledge of the area and the history was wonderful.  The weather was pretty rainy so we didn’t spend much time exploring the grounds but the personalized nature of the tours was absolutely perfect for us.  We can see just what we are interested in and skip all the boring stuff, getting great history of DC and little heard stories that are so interesting.

I highly recommend touring with these guys!  I will in fact be booking several more tours with them while we are here.  I could sit down for several hours with both Bill and Gil and just discuss history and the ins and outs of DC life!

When we were finished, Monty & Bill dropped us off at the Old Ebbit Grill to eat a late lunch/early dinner.  It was delicious!  It was raining pretty hard when we left and we were heading back to our car when I suddenly smelled the wonderful scent of cigars.  Sure enough, there was a cigar shop just down from the restaurant.  As both my husband and I enjoy a good cigar (and we managed to forget to bring some this trip) we were very excited to find this place.  We intended to just pop in and buy a few to take back to the RV with us but as it was raining, we decided to sit in the shop and each smoke for a while.  We met some really great locals and ended up sitting there talking and smoking for about 2 hours.  It was the perfect end to a rainy yet fun day.

The perfect way to end the day!

This was my favorite day so far for sure!!
